How do I go about actually getting a job in another city or state before I move there?

I do not have the resources to move to another city and not have a job. Is it possible to actually obtain employment before having moved there? If so, could someone give me some advice on how to go about it?

Sometimes companies will do on phone interviews. My sister works in Human Resources. She is on the phone often.

I am actually in that same position myself and this is what I've thought of: First, why don't you check the want ads of the local paper in the city where you want to move to. Most papers are online, so you can check out what jobs are available. If you see something you might be interested, give them a call and see if it might be something you would be interested enough to go check out in person, which you will probably have to do once just to meet the people in charge of hiring. However, it would be worth it if you could find something you would want before moving. Also, depending on the field(s) you are interested in, how about having a head hunter/recruiter or a placement agency help you out? They can put your resume out there for you and let you know of any leads. Good luck!

It really depends on what you do for a living. If you're in a career that's in high demand, you have more opportunity.

I would apply for jobs in the city in which you desire to reside and, in the cover letter, say that you're moving to that city by a certain date. Otherwise, the recruiter will most likely assume that you're seeking relocation assistance. Sometimes (again, depends on your career), companies will make exceptions and conduct interviews over the phone or via teleconference. If not, you're probably going to have to pay your way out there for an interview.

a. Send resumes by e-mail with cover letters that explain the situation. Most companies will not respond at all. A small number will contact you and request a telephone interview. After or during the telephone interview, they may agree to pay for your expenses to travel there to interview in person.

b. Work with one of the contract agencies that places people in temporary jobs without interviewing in person. Get a temporary job where you want to move, then move there, then start looking for a permanent job.

Search via http://www.careerbuilder.com in the city you are considering moving to. Find job openings and call the companies. You could try to set up a bunch of interviews in a 1 or 2 day span and take a trip out there to do the interviews.

Find a local newspaper in the city that your moving to which publishes classifieds online.
