How do I go about asking for a raise at work?
Find answers to your legal question.

How do I go about asking for a raise at work?

I am a legal assistant at a law firm in a small (ish) city in CA. I have been a legal assistant for over 7 years and have extensive experience in many facets of the legal field. I have been working exclusively for this firm since July of 2007 and am still making a mere $12 (+benefits). I know I am younger than most of the secretaries here, but that shouldn't be an issue, given my actual working experience. Also, I recently found out that a lower-level secretary with only 1 1/2 years of experience makes more than I do, and I find that totally wrong. Given, she is model-gorgeous (and actually a good friend of mine), but that shouldn't make any difference when it comes to job preformance. I'm not hard on the eyes, mind you, but it really bothers me that I make less.

With regards to my work productivity, I work for 2 attorneys and they have nothing but good things to say about me to HR, and they have told me they have put in the good word to them as well.

Any sugguestions?

Thank you :)

The typical approach is to back-up your asking with a true work appraisal. Don't compare yourself to others. Make a list of your accomplishments and how you are helping. Make a list of your responsibilities and how you may have taken on new responsibilities.
Know when your last raise was, and what you have accomplished since then.
Comments like I fell that, I think I, should be omited from the converstation.
You need to have real proof of your value.

Go straight to your boss tell him what you have done for the company and tell him you beleive you deserve a raise.

You have only been there a little over 4 months and think you deserve a raise already? Seems like if you thought you were worth more money you should have negotiated it before you accepted their offer.

How busy is the office? Have you noticed a slow down in the past couple months? Do you think they are busy enough to have the funds to pay you more?

Whenever I have asked for more money, I present my case with a business presentation.

I show my boss what I was hired to do, and what I am doing now (always a lot more work than I was originally hired to do), then I do in depth research and also present what similarly skilled people are making in the local market.

Present your case as a business deal, and you have a good shot.

Good luck

You can always ask your boss to have a talk. Tell him your situation and how stressfull this is becoming. I would recommend you rather move to a different company. Why? well even if you ask for a raise sweety it would be very hard for a company to give you a raise (specially knowing the time you've been there) and if they give you a raise, how much are they gonna give you? 50 cents? maybe a dollar? even if they paid you $13 per hour I make more than you. Oh and I dont have no where close to your experience. Oh and the looks, you look like an eye candy for what I can tell. Cute, smart and experienced. They should pay you way more.
