How do I go about filing for bankruptcy, I'm close to getting my auto reposessed and want to put it off ?

I'm filing for bankruptcy, and have a current auto loan, and the bank is calling telling me to pay the past amount due or they will come get it this week, I dont have the money for it. Can I prolong this and keep the vehicle when I file?
Additional Details
What should I tell the bank I have the loan with? They called and asked me to bring in 1100 or it will go into resposession. Do I call and say im working on bankruptcy?

You need to consult with a lawyer asap. Most of the time they will talk to you for free, for your first consultation.

see a lawyer
once you have filed they can't take the vehicle

you will have to do a reaffirmation to keep the car it will be set in writing how much of the arrears you will make up each month as well as making your payments. until you get into court and get this filed they can repossess at any time.

Filing bankruptcy won't discharge the auto loan. Make the payment, or lose the car.
Sorry.

It depends what kind of car you've got and how much it is worth - it has to be worth over £5k for them to include it in a bankruptcy case.
Bankruptcy is a HUGE decision and should be a last resort. If the car is not secured against your house it is a "non-priority" debt and the law states that this can be paid back at £1 per week. If you go to the Citizens Advice Bureau with details of all your creditors the will write to them and offer them £1 per week (or £2.60 pw for priority debts) - they are not able to refuse (and you get to keep your car!! If your debts are over £5k and there is no chance of ever repaying them the CAB have forms that you need to complete to file for bankruptcy and you take these to your local magistrates court. You have to pay £400 to file for bankruptcy and even then there is no guarantee that your debts will be cleared (!)
Contact the National Debt Helpline and they will go through all your options - good luck!
