How do I quit a contract job without resigning?

I have been working in a UK university as a contract research staff. My line manager is an absolute nightmare and makes life hell for everyone. No matter how hard we work, he always has a rant at us and makes us feel like dirt. I can't sleep at night, dread going to work everyday and so often I am physically shaking with hypertension. Even get nose bleeding sometimes.
After 2 years of this job, I can’t take his bullying anymore. My current contract ends only 3 months from now and I don’t want to work that long. If I resign now, the problem is that it will show on future reference. If I pursue him for constructive dismissal or go off sick, that too will show on future reference! I am in a field where any blemish on reference will mean an end to career.
I feel like stuck with a nasty boss and that is killing me. HELP!!! Is there a quiet way out? How about asking him to redraft the contract and shorten it so that it ends earlier? If I do that, will it show on future reference?

Thanks for the answers so far, but I was looking a solution other than working out the 3 months! Would be grateful if someone could tell me if other solutions are possible, such as redrafting the contract. Cheers.

Work the three months...leave with your head high...do not burn bridges.....dignity and grace always wins out over and idiot boss....do it ....... you will love yourself for it... |

wait out the 3 months and then take a long break before you take the next job. Also ask another person in the section or department to be your reference so you dont need to use the manager. |

Woooooo Honey, the only thing I can tell you is no there is not really away out of a contract job, but you can always apply for another position in the company and wait til the contract is out. Good Luck |

Maybe you could go to H.R. and express your concerns and hopefully have them redraft your contract. You can also go to the doctor and have your conditions medically listed as a direct cause of your job making it an hazard for you to continue to work there and that should carry alot of weight to H.R. |
