How do I tell my boss?

How do I tell my boss?

I have worked for my boss for 3 1/2 years. I have recenlty found out that our family business really needs my help and they have offered me a job with benefits and better pay. I am obviously going to work for my family, as family comes first, even in the job field. So how do I break it to my boss that I am leaving. He is very dependant on me, as I am the only support staff in an office of attorneys. I do pretty much everything here and its going to be hard for him to find someone right away. I am just not sure how to break it to him that I am leaving!!! I am planning on giving at least 3 weeks notice, hopeing that will soften the blow. Any suggestions??? He is also a very intimidating person!!

Write a very nice resignation letter and say pretty much what you've told us... an opportunity has opened for you to work in your family business and your last day will be XXX. Be sure to add that you enjoyed working for him and have learned so much from him. Also that you appreciate him giving you the opportunity to work for him.

Letter in hand, ask for a moment of his time. Then sit down and say what's in the letter. Afterward, you can hand him the letter while explaining, "Here's my letter."

That's it. Three weeks is a generous notice and I'm sure he'll appreciate it. Although you do a lot for him and it'll be an inconvenience for him to replace you, I'm sure he'll know this is an opportunity for you that you can't pass up. I don't think you need to mention the better pay and bennies, but you can if you think it'll make a difference. To me, just knowing that you're working in the family business is enough to explain leaving (better pay & bennies can be matched, but working in the family biz can't).

Good luck!

Give notice, and offer to help train the person who replaces you. It is a usual part of business that staff will turn over, so he'll be ok.

Give your notice and let him know you would be more than happy to train the new employee until their well off.

give your 3 weeks notice immediatly and let him know exactly what you said here. He will be pleased with such a lengthy notice and recognize that you are trying to NOT leave him a lurch. Also, you would like to help with the training so he is covered when you go.
every boss has experienced a good employee leaving for one reason or another. He can handle it, he may not like it but that is life!
Good luck with your new gig!

If you are on good terms with him, tell him the truth that your family business really needs your help. He may not be happy, but I think he will understand. If he tries to intimidate you then he doesn't deserve a 3 week or more notice. Also keep in mind if he, or anybody else, tries to intimidate or make you feel bad they are being selfish and there is no reason for you too feel guilty. Family ALWAYS comes first.
Good Luck!

I would simply write a letter and hand it to him personally. If he gets to work on it immediately, he can have someone in there fairly quickly so you can assist with training. If your family business will allow you, you may even offer to be "on call" to the new employee for an hour or two a day until they have been in place a couple of weeks -- or offer to come in and assist them on a weekend if they are willing to pay you.

Then, depending on what your job is there are some steps you can take.

1. Write down complete steps for the things that you do. Be as clear and concise as possible. Perhaps even do screen shots of any complicated areas of programs that you use. Think of things that you do only once a year, or once a quarter as well -- these things are often missed.

2. If you work with any legal specific software, contact the person from whom the software was purchased and ask about the availability of training. Determine the costs involved and their availability for training so that it can be scheduled as soon as possible if necessary.

Get the above information together for your employer, and it will make your leaving easier.

give him 2 weeks notice and explain thre situation. its ur choice not his, he'll get over it. u have a better offer so go to it!!! plus it is family

Make an appointment to speak with him. Prepare a letter of resignation and bring it with you. then open the discussion with something like, "Boss, this is really a difficult discussion for me. I've really enjoyed working here; however, I've been asked to join the family business and I've decided to accept the offer. I'd like to work with you so we can plan a smooth transition. Here's my resignation letter; my last day will be on x. Let's plan how we'll communicate this to the staff/find and train a replacement/etc."

Getting him focused on the future as quickly as possible will minimize the chance that he'll pitch a fit. And if he does, so what, really? He won't fire you and you don't need him for a reference.
