How do I write a resume to reflect I was a stay at home mom since my last job?

I've been out of work almost 4 years taking care of my kids and now I'm planning on going back to work. Is there a way to say I've been a full time mom on my resume so companies realize what I've been doing since my last job? I don't know what the acceptable standard is for this kind of lapse in work.

The most important thing is to NOT leave a blank period of time as employers may wonder if you were in jail or doing something you would not have known such as peeling for a strippers club. By all means, put the dates down (e.g. Feb.2003 to present) and then : "Fulltime homemaker by choice" It could be good to add: "During these four years I communicated regularly with former colleagues and kept abreast of changes/developments in the ... industry. I feel I could quickly step back into my former career."
And, by all means, start internet searches, etc. to be certain that you ARE up-to-date. Good luck.

"Left my employment to devote myself to being a full time mother until my family reached an age where returning to the work force was workable"

"homemaker" or "stay-at-home mom" I've seen. With applicable dates and a list of responsibilities. Try and stay away from the "cooked daily lunch for Suzie and Tommy" and stick more with "balanced time between pre-educational child activities and maintaining a structured household". You might want to also list how you kept yourself up to date on the current activities in your job field. Read science journals, kept an eye on the stockmarket/house market, etc, depending upon what you area of expertise is.

I would try to subtly explain it in my objective...

Something like, "I am looking forward to learning and growing in 'this' career field after being a stay at home mom since my last employment.

as well as list homemaker in your previous employments...it IS a job and all.

I'm no good as resumes, but you get the idea.

When you fill in your job history and the last date worked is 4 years ago, you will probably be asked to fill in the missing time.

I would say Homemaker, and list the dates. Then Go ahead and list all the responsiblities you have. Be creative, but serious. Paying bills, claening, driving kids around, maintain schedules, delegating task, etc. You were working hard, Not hardly working, go ahead and show it. ***

Write in the resume that you was self employed, since your last job. Write a short description of your duties.
example. I did laundry, iron, cooked set up for diner etc.

The pressure is on the worker to be like a slave. Be proud to be a Mom . Take the picture scrap book. You know the kind of people you like or are you going to work in a deep mine in northern Ontario.
