And do they earn more than solicitors? I know that barristers are self-employed and even pay the chambers they belong to. But I wonder who pays them? How do they earn?

Quite a large salary , but I believe they are not fully occupied as we know it, probably used as and when required, paid by retainers from solicitors-and legal aid etc |

Barristers earn more than solicitors and are classed as self-employed. I Think they get paid by the government and they get paid loads. Sorry if this wasn't helpful. |

yes they are self-employed but a lot of work is put to them by "friendly solicitors" who no doubt get a kickback from them in the long run.
i,m dealing with a solicitor regarding my late dads will and have just been referred to a newcastle barrister who for what i would class as approx 1/2 hours work if that just to look at my case, not act on it, and this is for comment only, it cost me £500+vat. this was just for info only.
my solicitor charges about £200 ph and a senior partner goes at about £400 ph, even the secretary gets charged at nearly £100 ph.
a lot of barristers live by referals and many are paid by the state by legal aid cases |

Solicitors make a fortune but pale into insignificance compared to barristers who are paid from the bottomless pit of legal aid money. |

hmm im not sure actually ive wondered this myself as my friends mum is a barrister and single mum and she has a huge house and is basically minted, il keep an eye on this qu would like to know myself. sorry am not very helpful. |
