How do people with criminal convictions go about gaining legitimate employment?

How do people with criminal convictions go about gaining legitimate employment?

I mean that in this day an age most employers require police checks and references before employing people. ( Especially here in Australia)
Is there an industry that accepts them or do they remain jobless?

I'm asking out of curiosity.

they usually get shifty jobs that pays under the table. Sometimes a fella who is so desperate to feed himself or his family will take any job no matter how little he will be paid. I have worked in a restaurant and a dish washer there was an ex con. He was getting paid around minimum wage and it was cash under the table.
