How do you cope with the fear of death?
|
I want to be a Police Officer, but I know that there will always be a sort of fear of what can happen on the job. Is there any way that you deal with this? Just be optimistic?

I embrace it. Death has nothing on me. I'm not afraid of it. Death is only a new beginning, but dying to serve and protect your country and fellow man and woman is the greatest honor you may achieve. |

It is okay to fear death, for it will happen eventually. But life is about living, not about thinking about the eventual end. If you become a police officer, you will be able to help a lot of people maybe even save lives. So not only would you be living, you'd also keep a bunch of other people living!
Life is great! Live now! Die later! :) |

All of us are afraid to die, your only difference is the immediacy of how that could happen. I suppose that's an exitentialist (q sp) thing. |

If you want to be a police officer then you are fulfilling your dream. Not everyone gets to do that. I understand your fear of death but when your number is up, it does not matter if you are a police officer or a loan officer. Enjoy your life. No one knows how long they have and every day is a gift from God. Don't worry just live your life. |

being a police officer is an honest job. i come from a family of police and career military. it can be a hard life, but if the job clicks with you then the satisfaction is high.
you can die on any job. if you let fear of death get to you, you'll run the possibility of making mistakes and not pursuing things you might be very good at and meant to do. mistakes can be dangerous, but any officer who said they didn't worry at all, would be a liar. it's natural. good luck. |

Why not try to be a Corrections Officer first. You will deal with the same element, you will learn about law and how to use a gun but you will be in a somewhat safer environment. This job also pays pretty good. This way you can build up your confidence and know what to expect on the streets. |

You learn much about officer safety in the academy and while on your field training (FT). In fact, you won't pass your FT if you can't demonstrate good officer safety skills while doing your job.
Cops do sense fear but they don't let it get in their way when carrying out their duties. Most believe: when it's your time, it's your time. You need to study well while in the academy and never become complacent on the job. It is good to sense fear when appropriate. However, when you lose that sense of fear, your days are numbered. Criminals, especially murderers will take advantage of a complacent cop, and take him out.
Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. Police work is not for everyone and only for a select few who can handle the stress and demands. A large majority of cops are divorced or experience hardships in marriage. It really depends on who the cop marries. He or she would have to be extremely patience, humble, gentle, and very understanding.
Lastly, the average cop dies of a heart attack or suffers a stroke five years after retiring. I hope I didn't burst your bubble.
I know I went a little too far but, what's wrong with that? :) |

dont fear death. the odds of dying as a police officer are lower than a soldier. just remember that you are serving your country in a much safer environment. |
