How do you tell an employer you are leaving because another job pays more?
Find answers to your legal question.

How do you tell an employer you are leaving because another job pays more?

I am a young attorney who has been practicing for only 7 months at this small firm. I am considering leaving for another position that pays more but I feel a little guilty because this firm paid my bar dues, notary costs, association memberships, 401(k) matching 100%, all my health insurance premiums, etc. However, it's not the type of law I want to do and I am getting the same deal, and a higher salary, at another firm. I don't want to be ungrateful but costs are RISING but my salary isn't at this firm.

You've only been there 7 months, it isn't reasonable to expect to have gotten a raise in that short a time, especially considering all the up-front costs they paid for you.

But just tell them you are leaving, that you've found a job closer to your interests in the type of law you want to practice.

Why would you be shy about the reason you're leaving? Everybody works to get paid and can't be blamed for seeking greener pastures.
If i were in your shoes I'd approach my current employer and let them know that you're considering an offer that is more attractive. After 7 months of service they might well consider matching your offer. That would be the best scenario for you because you'd get a raise and wouldn't have to start fresh with a new company and no seniority.

you can actually state on your resignation letter that the reason for your leaving is career growth and some personal reasons...that really works...

You are under no obligation to disclose the reasons why you are leaving one employer for another. If they inquire to you, and you want to disclose that information, just say it. Just politely say that you have been offered a position with a higher income, and given your situation its a good opportunity given your own personal situation. Who knows, they might match the salary of the new job. =)
