I have seen it and it does not look like a regular keyboard, and then their is this receipt that comes out of it with symbols arranged in different patterns?
What is all of that and how does is specifically work?

It works on phonic I believe. Now they use tape recorders alot. Ask a reporter. |

Stenotype machine keyboards are totally blank. In school you're taught Theory that includes learning and memorizing where the letters and combinations of letters are, as well as the number bar and finger positioning. There are 22 keys. Learning Theory is the critical part; it takes total discipline, focus and the ability to zone out any/all interruptions, i.e. someone coughs, sneezes, a door closes, someone walks across the room-things that actually happen in a courtroom. When you're out of Theory, Speed-Building classes are next.
What look like symbols are the letters and combination of letters/numbers the Court Reporter taps out. Some Reporters write out numbers. "Phrases", i.e. "What is your name and address" or "Do You Recall" can be written out in one stroke-depending on the Reporter and his/her dexterity.
The "receipt" you see is the Theory result of what the Court Reporter ("CR") has typed out on stenotape. Unless you know the Theory you wouldn't be able to transcribe it.
Some courts may have RealTime - As the Court Reporter's typing, there's a split screen overhead. 1/2's the CR's notes (those "symbols"), the other is in English-transcribed instantaneously.
If you're really interested, visit a court in your area and observe the C.R. During recess, ask any of the court officers if you could speak to the C.R. - most are willing to oblige. |
