How does this unemployment situation make sense?

I work at a certain bank corporation where two of my friends previously worked as well. Both were fired for the same reason (absences). Both worked in the same vicinity doing the same exact job. Both were fired in the same month (February).
Friend A is a 33 year old single white female, no children, who was hired in March 2008. She is receiving approximately $1100.00 a month in unemployment benefits until August 2009.
Friend B is a 21 year old single black male, no children, who was hired in June 2008. He is receiving approximately $1560.00 per month in unemployment benefits until February 2010!
I'm really flabbergasted about the whole situation. Does anyone know how this can possibly make sense?
Additional Details
Well, there are about 200 people in our department at work doing the same job, so there's not going to be like, a big meeting about absences of one person. People get canned here on a bi-weekly basis. ;)

In most states you don't get benefits if you get fired ..
Why is (a) getting more than (b) ? because (a) lies a lot more perhaps ?

hmmm what's wierd to me is that they were both FIRED and were still able to collect unemployment benefits ! Where i live, you can't collect benefits if you were fired, only if you were layed off...wierd. |
