Most of the big name reputable firms hire its associates after their second year of law school. They'll either hire young or seasoned veterans with 10 years of experience. There rarely is a middle ground. |

First of all, the legal market is taking a HUGE hit right now. There are layoffs left and right. If you are good enough to get a summer associate position at a top new york law firm, you should consider looking at mid-tier firms and expand your job search to the government sector also.
At a top firm in New York, the starting pay for someone right out of law school will be about 160K or so. But I wouldn't be surprised to see that number lowered to $130K.
Again, it is really tough out there, especially for the corporate, finance, and securities practice area, because of the economy. Some firms have even rescinded their offers to 3L's. Imagine being laid off before even starting your job! |

Yeah, I agree with the first post, even in good times it is hard to get a job at that firm. You will need really good law school grades, be in the top 5-10% of your class, go to a top school, have some interesting personal experience, and get on law review and only then will you have a chance to be hired. The odds are stacked against most people in law school. More likely you will go to a school, graduate, hopefully pass the bar, and struggle to get a $50,000 a year law job, and have $120,000 worth of law school debt to pay off. |
