I suggest you read the biography of Stu Unger. You probably don't know who he is, but he was one of the greatest poker player till he died back in 1998. He was unbeatable in gin rummy and many poker tournaments or in any poker game. His father was a sports better and he grew up working with his father doing this. He made over 30 million in his lifetime, but died with less than a thousand dollars to his name. His weakness was heavy drugs plus sports betting and he would take his winnings and proceed to lose on both. Here is a link of his life.

I don't know if sports betting is legal in Australia or not, but even if it is and many people do even if not, could be an upside/down from day to day and you would have to be really good and be prepared when the 'gods are not with you" when luck just changes.
My suggestion is that you first get a job in a casino in the sports betting department and see 1st hand how they change the points up/down to try and make a profit.

When I did a google search, I found more sites where they want you to bet vs a career in this. With so many casinos out there today, most likely you are competing with them and may find yourself broke real fast vs years ago, when there were few casinos at all.
If you should choose, you most likely will need financial backing and do a lot of research to see if you indeed could make a living out of it. But like poker that is now worldwide and many kids become young millionaires and then years later find out they are broke since they don't either manage money or the competition becomes better and they now find they have to find a "real" job to support themselves.
