How legal is my job application?
Find answers to your legal question.

How legal is my job application?

I have recently applied for a job with a British bank. I was offered the job on the day of application, but think I will be turning it down as I find it very invasive. Firstly, they want 3 years worth of proof of address. I have given them 2 as this is how long I have been out of full time education and into full time work. Before this time, I had no utility bills or bank statements (which is what they say they require). At this time in my life I also moved about a fair amount, although within the same city.

They also want to perform a credit search on me and it has been mentioned to me that part of my probation is that they will monitor my own personal finances. I have nothing to hide, but I really do not like the idea of this.

I will also have to leave my current bank and move to them.

Is any of this illegal or is it just immoral? Would anybody else want to take the job? I'm also worried about job security if they are so vigilant about what they want from their applicants.
Additional Details
They will not accept a letter from my parents to state I was living there, nor will they accept a letter from college. They only accept utility bills.

I am in the U.S. and banks here even do the same in many cases. It is not illegal nor immoral. It's a bank and they want to make sure they are not hiring jesse james or billy the kid! I suggest you not take this job. If you are whining about this process no way you'll be able to handle the pressures of management.

Where are you located? How did you apply?

Sounds like a scam.

It's not illegal in the U.S. I'm not sure about Great Britain, though.

Actually, I wouldn't turn it down over that. Banks always, ALWAYS, ask for all of these stipulations anytime you ask for a job there. You might just be a teller but they require it every time. It is normal, and they have been doing it for ten or more years here in America.
Don't feel violated, for sure. They actually are very picky for good reasons. There are many security reasons for all of this and they also want to bring you into their high security and protect you as well. It is like in America now any time someone applies for a job the employer has to put their application through a rigourour set of standards set by Homeland security, check credit, and blood tests, the works. That is for a job that is NOT at a bank.
Try to get very used to the fact that any job that pays well will want to know you are full blooded and legal, and have serious credintials proving you are not a terrorist. Don't you want to be safe?
For all of that past stuff from being college or whatever, you can get a letter from the school saying you were there and all that. You can also get a letter from your parents stating living conditions when you lived there. I'm sure it is acceptable to prove your relations with the government. It is just for security reasons and for your own safety as well.
