It depends upon the employer. As I am growing more experienced as an employer, I am less likely than before to hire somebody with a prior conviction. I would never hire somebody who had a violent or financial crime, but I would have hired somebody with other minor offenses. The reason that I am less likely to hire people with a criminal record has nothing to do with the crime, but rather I am finding that poor credit or a criminal history tend to be indicative of somebody that is not handling responsibility well. The last two employees that I let go fell into this category. One was in the process bankruptcy and had a prior conviction for writing bad checks that was 15 years old. I accepted his explanation that he had credit issues b/c of a divorce and that he was a dumb kid when he wrote the bad checks. He obviously did not learn since he would disappear for hours, show up drunk and was totally unreliable.
I also hired a kid that had some late payments on all his credit cards. I did not think too much of it. Well, it showed that he was irresponsible, and I did not identify it. He screwed up everything he did and was extremely lazy.
So, even though every individual has their own standards, I would imagine that I am not much different from other employers. If your conviction shows that you are irresponsible, many will exclude you. |

Actually it is against the law to ask "that question" now. |

depends on what your prior conviction was... it doesn't always mean that they won't hire you... |

Some are willing, some aren't. For many, it will depend on what the conviction was for, and how long ago it was.
