i live in scotland and i am just about to start a new job working 12 hours a day from 6am to 6pm mon to fri.
can someone tell me when/how long they are legally required to give me a break?

the best way to find out is to contact your regional labour board. i'm not sure about scotland but in the us it is handles on a state by state basis most require that employers post labour laws somewhere at the work site (mine pins them up in the lavatory...nice). typically in a 12 hour day they are required to give you a half hour lunch with two fifteen minute breaks, there are exceptions to this however if you work for emergency services, police, firefighter, medical/nursing staff, paramedics etc... the exceptions may include other jobs as well, so as i said earlier, contact your local labour board. it really is the only way to know for sure. if it turns out your are not getting your allotted time away from work try to resolve the matter internally first, keep all communications with your employer and only if the matter is not resolved to your satisfaction then file a grievance with the labour board, it shows good faith if you can demonstrate your efforts to resolve the problem prior to filling a grievance. i hope this helped |

Normally during a 8 hr period 3 breaks (2 are paid breaks) The 2 breaks, You Get 1 In the Morning, And the Other in the After noon Now your Lunch wich is usually 30 minutes and that you have to take off the clock , Your employees does not pay you to feed your face |
