How long did it take you before you were assigned work in a new job?

I started a new job on Monday. I was just given some documents to read up on and for the rest of the week was not given any tasks, I was reading and preparing myself for the job. When I asked them what I need to do they just gave me more to read. What do you recommend shall I wait until they assign something to me? Thanks in advance.
Additional Details
I just realize that I placed the question in the wrong section. The job is not in law but it information technology. The documents given to me were not for training there goal was to get myself familiar with the file structure is organized.

Are you in training for the job or something, if yes then when it's completed you will be assigned your work load after. If no then i would ask the manager that you are ready to start and when should you expect to receive your first workload.
