The amount depends very much on the quality of the lawyer and the type of law they practice. A trial lawyer will make a lot more than a lawyer that draws up wills and that sort of thing. Depending on the lawyer, they generally make at least $200 an hour going way up to much much more for the really big name high powered attorneys. If they go to trial they get even more and some will expect even more on top of that if they win. A lawyer that works for a contingency fee will generally get a third of any monetary gain from a lawsuit but nothing if they lose. And what they make in a month or a year would certainly depend on what type of law they are practicing and how aggressive they are at taking on work.

There is much variation, like any career. A senior partner at a mega firm might make millions a year, but there are only a few thousand such persons in the entire country. The average attorney (nationwide) makes about $40-50K/year, which may or may not be worth the cost of attending law school.

A personal injury attorney can make a ton of money, if they have the right cases (massive injury) and are skilled, but there are many personal injury attorneys who make very little, and others who go bankrupt waiting for the "big case" to settle.
