Lawyers can make a lot of money (probably what you were hoping to hear), but the bad news is it's only a select few lawyers that make the lion's share of the money. Biglaw, or the largest 250 law firms in the country, tend to pay the best wages, hire the best law school graduates (top 30 school students and the top of the class at the remaining schools), and charge the highest billing rates to clients (which usually means the work they do is very challenging and complex). The typical biglaw associate makes a starting salary of 100K to 160K plus bonus depending on the market.
On the other hand most lawyers get by at very modest jobs working in government, for a private company, or doing "small potatoes" legal work which tends to be very routine. For example, solo practitioners often defend DUI cases, draft wills, and represent divorcees, all of which pay very little in general.
As a rule of thumb, you make more money working for companies who need representation and less money working for the government at any level or for consumers. |

I work for a small private practice firm in Fl. The attorney's do family and criminal law. There going rate is $300 an hour. They both make around $120-$150,000 a year. Not bad. But if the money is the only reason you want to be an attorney, then don't do it. Believe it or not, but it is hard work, and people are entrusting you with there lifes. |
