Hey guys
Started a new butcher apprenticeship and i'm enjoying the work so far, it's hard work and the hours are pretty long but i don't mind i guess.
Anyway i'm a bit suss on my boss i think he's ripping me off, i've only been working for him for a week now, i worked 40 hours this week and he paid me $232 and taxed it, surely i don't get paid $5 an hour, also he paid cash in hand and i didn't get a pay packet(i think that's what it's called) he just gave me cash and i don't know why he taxed it because i haven't even given him my tax file number yet.
Also i haven't signed anything to do with the apprenticeship, no forms to say i'm doing an apprenticeship with them, i don't know it just seems really dodgy to me.
This is my first job as well so i'm not really sure how it's meant to work but this doesn't seem right to me.
if you guys could tell me if i'm getting ripped off here i'd appreciate it.

Hey thanks, by the way i live in australia, but yeah what you said will probably be same here, although i thought $5 an hour would have been underpaid

You don't say where you are, so I assume you're working in the United States. Your employer has to pay you minimum wage, which at the moment is $6.55/hour. If he isn't and is paying you less, he's breaking the law. However, it's possible the $232 was after he retained the taxes. $6.55/hour times 40 hours equals $262. He may have withheld FICA, Federal and State taxes and your net pay was $232. Every taxpayer falls into a different bracket regarding federal and state taxes, so it's hard to know exactly how the taxes were calculated. Also, although it's in your employers best interest to leave a paper trail, it's totally his discretion whether to pay you by check or cash. And he won't need your tax ID until the end of the year when he gives you a W2. Until then, it's best if you keep a record of your wages yourself so you'll know if your W2 is correct. |
