How should I answer an interview question regarding a misdemeanor on my record?

I was recently terminated from a job and charged with a misdemeanor due to theft (no cash, only merchandise). Although I am 40 years of age and have no criminal record at all (not even a parking ticket), I made a one-time mistake and I faced the music. The misdemeanor is going to dropped soon and I have willingly agreed to make amends by paying restitution to my former employer. However, even though the charge will be dismissed, it will remain on my record as being charged with the crime for at least a year until I can have it expunged. I am aware that most employeers only ask about felony convictions, but by some chance, if the question should arise regarding the misdemeanor charge against me that was dismissed, how should I respond? I have no desire to be untruthful, but then again, I see no reason to give every detail regarding my one-time lapse of judgement. I'm interviewing for good jobs, but I'm afraid that the question will come up and I don't know how to answer it.

A traffic ticket is a misdemeanor, would you tell them about that? I doubt it will come up unless you need some sort of security clearance. In that case tell them. They like honesty when doing background checks - plus they'll find out anyway.

Honesty is the best policy. I work for a background company and most companies run background checks. It will show up. I think the best advice I can give you is that you admit your mistake and the steps you have taken to make sure that you will never repeat this mistake. Honesty is ALWAYS the best road to travel.

sorry to say that answering the question untruthfully will commit a crime of fraud

If it comes up, be honest.
Honesty is the best policy!

well don't try and cover it up, just be honest - employers will appreciate you for that.

I would be completely honest, just don't give every detail. Just say what you said above, that you had a lapse of judgement and it was a mistake you are taking every bit of responsibility for, and will not happen again. You sound like a very good good person and I'm sure any employer will be able to judge that, realizing that you have learned your lesson. And with luck, they won't even ask :)
