How the hell is it legal for my employer to do this??!?

I have Blue Cross Blue Shield Choice 100 PPO plan. I live, work, eat, sleep etc in UTAH. My insurance was given to me for CALIFORNIA. Talked to Blue Cross, referred me to the Benefits Service Center for my job. They told me they couldn't do anything about it and referred me back to Blue Cross. Said unless I had a life changing event there was no valid reason they could change it. Excuse me, this isn't my f*ing issue. I signed up under the intent to be able to use it in Utah. No doctor will cover what is supposed to be covered because EVERY doctor is considered out of state!!! I'm wasting $200 f*ing dollars a month on useless insurance and no one can correct this? Is that right or is the company just screwing me for their own sick pleasure? Additional Details They've looked at my address and basically told me "WEll we cover out of network providers."
Sure, at 4 times the cost of what it should be if they'd bothered to set it up right. I've also talked to my HR department. They are about as helpful as the Benefits resource center and BCBS,.

If your employer is telling you that they can do nothing about this, it is time to find a new employer, my friend. Have a nice day and good luck. |

WOW, it sounds as if you are being screwed big time, there is two things you should do
1) ALL states have a State of insurance department" You will have to do a search for it but when you find it there will be a 1800 # u can call and they can help you
2) You might want to start looking for a good laywer it sounds as if you might have a good case |

Do you have a copy of the application you filled out, showing your address, etc? If you do I would try taking it back to the Benefits office. Sounds cheesy but keep knocking on doors til one opens, someone is able to fix it, you've just talked to people who don't want to. |

I used to work for a company based in Michigan, so my plan was Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan. However, I worked in VA. They did not cause any problems, it was just were my insurance was based. Could that be the problem? As long as your address is correct, you should be able to see local doctors. If there are no local doctors, you should be able to see out of network doctors at the in-network cost. I had that problem when I went to college. I hate to say it, but I would continue calling until you get someone who can help. This is not your problem and it CAN be fixed. I don't know if the problem lies with HR or with BCBS, but someone CAN fix it. Good luck!!! |

I honestly think you choose the wrong option. When the insurance is entered in the system it should have raised flags when entering it, if that is what the company does. I am sure its a PPO not HMO because if it was an HMO you would have to chose your own doctor and the doctor would have been in UTAH not CA. I understand that you cannot change insurances/drop insurance until open enrollment but I would strongly suggest that you have HR talk to their broker and see what they can do for you. |
