I'm going to guess that the crime you were convicted of was Battery or the equivalent. On the actual application, you should provide the legal definition of the crime. A violent crime conviction alone is probably sufficient to take you out of the race completely for some jobs, but some thoughtful employers will think twice before dismissing you outright for an isolated misdemeanor. Be very careful if you are ever asked to explain your record, whether it be in writing or verbally--some people react very strongly to any "crime" involving children. Also remember that you're not obligated to volunteer any of the damaging facts ever again, the trial is over and done with once you are convicted.

they don't want an explanation -- if you were found guilty of the misdemeanor what was the actual misdemeanor? just list the actual legal title of the crime and don't try to explain yourself.

What ever you were charged with is how you would word it.
I must quote the Bible though "spare the rod spoil the child" it worked an me (I'm 36) and I don't know why corporal punishment is illegal when capital punishment is.
