The previous answer is incorrect.
1. The patent is a utility patent not a design patent, so they have the term incorrect. The term is 20 years from priority currently, although older patents may last 17 years from issuance. There are specific rules for figuring this out, however they are unimportant in this case since the patent is expired for failure to pay maintenance fees according to the PTO.
2. On relatively effective way to check is by using PAIR: http://portal.uspto.gov/external/portal/pair - for public users.
According to PAIR this patent expired in 2002.
There are other factors that can effect a patent's status that can't be checked with the PTO such as legal proceedings in federal court that may lead to the invalidation of a patent. It is recommended that you seek a patent attorney to assist you in determining whether a patent is still in force. |

"Abstract
