Venezuela_germ: That was the best answer!

If his an honest lawyer, then you don't want them. He'll lose and so will you.

thats like asking for proof that bigfoot exists...not likely gonna happen

There are many honest and ethical lawyers. Contrary to other posters, honest lawyers win more often because they know the law and do their jobs properly. You can get referrals from the local bar association, usually the supreme court website for your state will have a listing of attorneys and any ethical violations they have been convicted of as well as the attorney's credentials. Referrals from friends and family or from other attorneys are generally very good sources. Finally, you can go to the library to the legal reference section and get Martindale-Hubble. This is a listing of attys by state and specialty. Most listings include peer ratings regarding how ethical and attorney is. Be sure to choose someone who specializes in your issue. I don't think you'd want a foot surgeon to operate on your brain. It's the same with attorneys. Finally, if the attorney has a reputation for being dishonest, you don't want him or her. In the long run they'll screw you as well as the opposition.

There are lots of them.
Ask friends for referrals. See if there are any lawsuits against them.

Ask the Bar association to refer you. If they are affiliated with the bar, then they have to follow certain ethics guidelines.

Wait a minute guys! I am an honest lawyer. I represent both government and private industry employees in Illinois. I have a 97% win ratio in obtaining unemployment benefits - 98% win ratio in representing government employees. I win and I am honest. You can be honest with your client and the opposition and still provide your client with a zealous representation.

An honest lawyers starts when he/she first speaks to the potential client. First, I tell the potential client if they even have a case. If they don't have a case I will not represent them. I then give the potential client an analysis of the potential outcomes if I handle the case - from the worst to the best. I provide fee information up front. Once I quote on a case I do not change my fees. If the potential client cannot pay I will give them numbers to the legal aid office and will direct them to websites that can help.

If I take on a case, written complaints/briefs construct my client's case in the best legal light possible without containing lies -- because you can win without lying. Copies of all documents regarding the case filed with the court are mailed to the client. The client and I work up a fair settlement to present to the other side. When available I represent my client in mediations geared toward settling the case.

I have been a practicing honest lawyer since 1993. There are lots of honest lawyers out there. We are not the ones with the slick tv ads or the ones who promise the clients a million dollars for a $1.50 case. Honest lawyers are the ones your friends or family or other lawyers refer you to.

In agreement with Vann. No such thing as an honest lawyer. But that question is also very broad in nature. What do you mean by an honest lawyer? The manner in which he/she bills you? The manner in which they will represent you? If it has to do with billing that can easily be answered. As for how they will represent you and a number of other factors no way of knowing.
