so 5 years ago I was convicted of a felony for distribution of a controlled substance and I have since finished my probation with good remarks and I am completely clean of all drugs and doing good I have a job right now but my office is getting shut down due to the economy and I am in search of that new Job but everywhere I go they ask that darn question and of course I have to check yes and no one seems to want to give me a chance to prove that besides the fact that I screwed up once 5 years ago I am still qualified to do the Job and no one will hire me how do I get people to look past my record and see how I work

Well there are several options. You will HAVE to disclose your conviction, however when they ask you to explain it, tell them you would prefer to do that in person. Write it down like that.
Also, you can do welfare to work programs, google it. They can set you up with jobs and stuff.

I once worked with a felon who didn't check the box, she just wrote "will discuss at interview". I imagine anyone could guess that meant yes, but still.. she got hired to work with me.
Also, you could ask your current employer for a letter of recommendation and hand in a copy with each application.
I have found that networking is much more effective that application dropping anyway. You will probably have to turn in an application, but it really helps to be recommended by someone on the inside. You don't have to rely soley on your friends. Do you interact with other businesses at work? They will surely need to find a replacement for whatever it is your office does (another supplier or whatever). Ask who they are going with or who they know who is a good employer. Ask people who are acquaintances if they like their job. You know, be creative.

You could try applying for jobs that start out with a resume instead of an application form. This may give you the chance to explain yourself when you get to the point in the process where you are asked that question. |
