How to handle confronting your boss without getting in trouble?
|
I am a salary paid employee and the rest of the workers here are hourly. My boss has been watching my time very closely and checking up on me at all time to make sure that I am working my full 40 hours a week. I take a long lunch now and again but I make up for it by coming in early or staying a little late or skipping a break here and there. He knows I do this and said it was ok. Now, all of a sudden he has been keeping tabs on me. The rest of the employees are taking really long breaks about an extra 20 mins each time and taking 45 min lunches but only punching out for 20 mins. He is not saying anything to them. I have a few vacation days left and want to take a day off coming up soon and he got a little huffy when I asked. He said he wanted to know all the days I have taken. Which is fine I looked it up and wrote it all down so that he will know what I am owed. He does owe me days. When the guys want to take a day or leave early he doesn't think twice he just tells them that its fine.
I am always here, I hardly ever call in sick. I don't want to be treated differently and I don't want to cause to big of waves, but its not fare that the others get away with everything and I am watched like a hawk.
Any suggestions on how to handel this situation? Additional Details Here is the thing. I know that I am treated differenly because everything goes through me. Days off and most of the time I am there when they ask to go home and leave early. Also ... Every single person here says that I am treated differently. Not one person here thinks diff. They ALL say that I am treated unfairly. So I know for a fact what is going on...

There are details we do not have but if I may suggest--be careful.
There are 2 possibilities:
1) He is just making sure that he is getting is $$ worth for you. You are paid differently so you are being treated differently for tracking purposes. Depending on your relationship with him you can carefully approach him about it or just accept that he is watching you and get used to it and hope it changes over time.
2) He is looking for reasons to let you go. Coming in late, leaving early, long lunches....you may have a verbal agreement but the bottom line is that he can say you were late or whatever. Depending on where you live he may not have to justify not tracking the other employees to fire you.
My read on the situation: tracking your time is no big deal--toe the line for while until he lets up. Huffy about the time off in addition to the tracking makes me suspicious. I would suggest updating your resume just in case. Do not panic--I said just in case. It never hurts to look around. And I would suggest not making up time by skipping your breaks--again, depending on where you live, that might or might not be acceptable by law.
Good luck! |

It sounds like the typical aruments that go on between siblings and parents. Each kid thinks they are being treated differently and unfairly and whine about it to the parents. They don't see what is going on with the others, they only see what is going on with them.
So, you don't really know what the boss may have said to others and your perseption I am guessing is scewed and totally one sided. As you should with parents...respect your boss, they are the one that pays you...if you don't like them and their decisions, get a new job or start your own business. |

Eh, not much can be done here, he hasn't really said anything much that can be argued with. Just trust that he is keeping tabs on the other employees, he has to be.
BTW, my boss is the same w/ me, but only because she counts on me. I might get written up for what someone else gets nothing, but it's the other person who's going to get fired or get no bonus this year so I'm not worried. |
