I'm supervising a team of 10 staff and all my staff are older than me..I mean much older. Some of them are in their 40's, some are in their 50's, one in the 60's and I just turned 30 this year. It doesn't happen very often but there were two times when they were in disagreement with me, they responded that they know better than I do because they're older, they have more experiences, they have seen more, etc.
I've never had problems supervising staff at any ages and I take pride in my work. Has anyone experienced this type of situation before? What'd be an appropriate and professional response in that situation? Thanks.

Do you have any suggestions in terms of how to respond to the staff when they make those comments? for example, I always say "I appreciate your years of experiences in this area, however,...." But I feel like there should be another ways to respond that really sets the tone and sort of let them know that it's inappropriate to make such comments.

What worked for me was being humble whenever possible. I acknowledged the age discrepancy via self-deprecation and light-heartedness. I stuck to my guns on important matters that I felt strongly about, but I'd give in on the stupid things that didn't matter. I also elicited their 'expert' opinion at every APPROPRIATE opportunity, and thanked them profusely whenever I could. They slowly came to accept me - which is crucial if you want to build a team. Oh; and I also admitted I was wrong in a loud clear voice - tho rarely had to do that :) Good luck.... |
