The professor of a contract law class asked one of his better students, "If you were to give someone an orange, how would you go about it?"
The student replied, "Here's an orange."
The professor was outraged. "No! No! Think like a lawyer!"
The student then replied, "Okay. I'd tell him `I hereby give and convey to you all and singular, my estate and interests, rights, claim, title, claim and advantages of and in, said orange, together with all its rind, juice, pulp, and seeds, and all rights and advantages with full power to bite, cut, freeze and otherwise eat, the same, or give the same away with and without the pulp, juice, rind and seeds, anything herein before or hereinafter or in any deed, or deeds, instruments of whatever nature or kind whatsoever to the contrary in anywise notwithstanding...'" |

To the best of my knowledge you can type up something on your computer and then have you and the other party sign it in front of a notary and have it notarized and it is then a legal document. My bank will notarize for free since I have an account there, so check that. |

You can have a legal and binding contract on a napkin if you want. All it requires is that no illegal agreements are entered into. For instance, you can't make an agreement to rent out an apartment that you don't have the legal right to rent. Other than that, you will need the other person's signature and preferably but not mandatory, a neutral witness or two. |

Stop being a cheap skate. If this is important enough that you need a contract, go to an attorney and spend some dollars to have them to put it together. At the very least there are a number of websites that have generic documents for a whole variety of legal needs. For $20 or less you can use one of these. A contract is basically an agreement between parties to perform something in return for something else. So you have an offer, an acceptance and consideration. The easiest and best example is a proposal for marriage. You have an offer made by the man (usually) will you marry me. You have an acceptance (woman says yes). And you have consideration, the ring! Some contracts have to be in writing, I know that real estate contracts have to be in writing. |

Most contracts are unnecessarily complex. Depending on the purpose of the contract, there is likely an example you can find by entering the subject in the Google search engine. In my opinion, when a contract issue gets to court, both parties have already lost. |
