Find answers to your legal question.

I'm a contract attorney and I have just been offered a permanent position with the place I'm working?

So, I've been working at a contract attorney position for a large firm in Palo Alto for about 6 months. Finally, the law firm where I am working wants to offer me a position. What, if any, are my obligations to the agency that placed me there? Am I (legally) obligated to tell the agency? Must the law firm pay the agency some sort of commission or signing bonus to the agency?

I'm asking all these questions because I get the impression that the law firm will not hire me if they have to pay a fee to the agency....

I would be really happy to hear what my rights are.

Is there a temp recruiter in the house I can talk to?

*Must* the firm pay any sort of fee to the temp agency?

I'm really worried about it because it would probably mean I wouldn't get the job.

I would check if you have any type of contractual agreement with the agency.

Read over all contracts w/ a fine-toothed-come, or get one of your friends to (hey, you're a lawyer after all . . . you guys write these things up!)

If you don't, and it looks like you can take the job no-strings-attached, DO IT. I am one of the unemployed people these days and would do anything for a job in my field.

It is highly unlikely you will need to pay the agency any fee. That type of agreement would be extremely unusual and, as an attorney, I am sure you would have remembered agreeing to it.

It is possible the firm will owe the agency a fee - but that is simply abiding by whatever agreement the firm put in place with the agency prior to you beginning as a contractor.

Often after 6 months a contractor is able to be hired without a fee. Six months is fairly standard. If the firm does still owe a fee, it would be up to the firm to try to renegotiate.

Congrats on your offer and good luck!

Ha ha! Get ready for the most UNeducated answers (if any) you have heard in your life. This site is run over by 7 year olds and people who have two pieces of advice: dump him, or go see the doctor.

YOU SHOULD ASK THE FIRM, THAT YOU ARE WORKING FOR NOW, OUT OF LOYALTY........
