I'm currently claiming jobseekers allowance; family giving money classes as "income" or not?

Hey, if my parents would send me birthday money (I live in the UK, they live in the Netherlands) to my bank account, would that in any way be against the "you can only make £5 a week on top of your JSA"?

Also, I've been given back money from the dutch govt from taxes paid for when I worked there 2 years ago, if I transfer those funds to my UK account, would that be okay?

-small edit-
What if I have them put money in another account where my JSA isn't going into, would that make any difference?

any kind of money that goes into your bank account will be acounted for.
the benefits agency can check your account without telling you now and if they find money thats there then they can call you in to question you.

its advisable that if you do have money put into your account, then take it all out as soon as its cleared, then they might not notice, or do what a friend of mine did......... when they did question him about it, he told them that it was for his friend who did not have a bank account then got one of his friends to agree to the story.

90% of the time, they wont monitor your account all the time so you should be ok this once as long as its not a regular thing!

No it is not income it is a gift given by family out of love not financial gain. Tax refunds again are not assessed as this is your money you overpaid previously.

A tax rebate and gifts up to the value of almost £5000 are exempt from means tested benefits and tax.

Your JSA is dependant on you EARNING more than £5 a week- This doesn't include gifts for your birthday or a tax rebate for taxes you overpaid

Great question though!
edit: Your benefits won't be means tested unless you EARN more than £5 a week TAX REBATES AND GIFTS ARE NOT EARNINGS

And for all the people that think the government and social security agency have magical mystical powers and can look into your bank account- THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN!
That breaks every rule in the banking code book- have you never heard of the Data Protection Act?

The benefits agency can only assess a claim based on the bank statements you show them- no one has current access to your bank account except yourself

In theory you should but I wouldn't bother, my mum gives me money every week to survive as £60.50 benefit per week doesn't go far when my electricity is £40 per week and my HP car payment is £30 per week. Luckily enough I sign off tomorrow as I start work on Monday, my money stops tomorrow and I don't get a wage for a month so who helps me then? my mum of course. They wont know what is going in or out of your account but if you have another bank account it might be safer to get any other money put in there because at the end of the year when they charge tax etc from your bank account it might not balance to your income but I wouldn't worry about that as there is too many unemployed people for them to target you. as for your tax rebate if it is under about £6000 it will be ok. I cant find where it says you can only make £5 per week before it affects your benefits, any money is supposed to be declared - on my signing on slip is says i can work 16 hours per week without having to declare it but if I make any income I must declare it?

Worry not, when in receipt of government benefits they watch your bank account closer than you do.Should they feel they can legally squeeze anything out of you (by way of reducing your benefits) they will contact you.Your O.K. with the two example's you have given though.
