I work full time (hourly wage) in Oregon. I just received an e-mail telling me I have to work Saturday and since I hate my job, I'm really pissed. I've been wondering if they can legally make me work an extra day during the week. Isn't this the type of thing they should give you an option? Or at the very least, come to me in person and ask if I'm available to work six days this week instead of simply "informing" me.
Am I delusional or do I actually have a point? Please help!

what they have done is totally legal
sure it would be nice to tell you in person if that is how you normally communicate. you did not say whether or not e-mail was a common form of communication with this employer.

It would have been a lot nicer if they told you in person but yes they can make you work. If you hate your job so much why don't you just quit and find another one; then you would not have to worry about working on your off day. You would have no job at all. |

Unless there is a religious reason preventing you from working on Saturday, there's nothing stopping them from telling you they need you to come in, as far as I know. They just need to pay you time and a half for anything over 40 hours. But if this is an ongoing thing and not some company emergency, of course they should have told you.
They sound like weasels.
I would pretend I didn't get the e-mail, or tell them that I'd already made plans for that date. But if that's not an option, I would go in and look for another job. It's easier to find one while you're still employed.
In the meantime, you MAY want to check out this site. It's very good for these kinds of issues.
