I'm in college considering becoming a cop, what are the pros and cons?

There are pros and cons about any career. The pros and cons are often subjective. For example, some police officer feel that rotating shifts as opposed to a steady 9-5 job is a negative thing. Some police officers like the variety of working different hours. The list of what can be considered a good or bad thing can go on and on. The majority of police officers enjoy the career they have chosen. Being a police officer is honorable. It is a career that comes with a lot of responsibility, and demands dedication and a desire to serve. There are many things to consider when thinking about becoming a police officer. Being a cop means dealing with people, understanding how they behave, and being able to manage people situations. Yes there are laws and rules you have to know, but if you can't deal with people, do something else.

I remember attending a seminar in college where a watch commander from Atlanta brought three offices with him to the lecture. He introduced them one at a time, talking about some of their skills and accomplishments. Two of them were linebacker types, the perfect picture of what you see in the movies. He introduced the last one who was a no-special-thing woman in her thirties, and then added she was considered one of the most outstanding police officers.

The reason: she could manage people and situations. She could get unruly citizens to behave, she could get perps to talk, and she could get people inside and outside the department to cooperate. While the department had lots of officers qualified for tac ops, the number who were good at community-style policework were few and far between.

Best of luck to you.
