I am a Legal Secretary and Unhappy. I want to go into a different field. Any advise?

I am a legal secretary/paralegal. I am unhappy because the hours are too long and they expect my job to be my life. They just cant accept my hours from 9-6. my a hole boss said that If i want to be part of them, meaning the company and social circle, i am required to work crazy hours. they were here till 430 in the morning working on a brief last night. i aksed him if i want to get promoted do i have to stay late all the time, not meaning till 430, (about 8 or 9 every night) and he said i shouldnt be thinking or asking that. he expects me to have no life whatsoever. his life is his job. they dont care that i want to get ahead and just do my required work at my hours (9-6) they expect me to work late, spend no time with my fiance and have no l ife in order to be part of them. on top of it, they are always intimidating me and making me feel bad. I want a career that is rewarding, normal hours (i will work late sometimes, as appropriate), pays very well and that I love. My interests are sci-fi, nature, weather, history, artistic things and reading. Any ideas. Another question, are all law firms like this. i would consider continuing w/ law if the hours are more reasonable and i am not put on the spot all the time. I understand everyone has to work late at one pooint or another. its a part of working and a part of life. these people are just so self indulged and in love in a sick way with their work. its unhealthy and obsessive. I understand that they have deadlines. every job does. they also have a tendency to wait tiill the last minute and expect everyone else to suffer. please help.

1. Have you considered finding another job? Not all jobs are like that and unless your boss is in trial every single day of his career (or procrastinates), there is usually no reason to have to stay late every night (or except the secretary to stay late).
2. Are you paid overtime? I certainly hope so because I don't think your position is qualified as exempt from overtime under FLSA rules.
3. I suggest you find another job - this one seems to be taking advantage of you. Most law firm jobs as a secretary or paralegal are 9-5 jobs. |

Welcome to the field of Law. Yes, most law jobs ARE like what you have described.
Also:
Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!!! This is not a good field to invest in! Reasons: There are simply WAY TOO MANY attorneys - (Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, U.S. Supreme Court) says we have too many lawyers practicing, very bad economy, today too many people (mistakenly) think they can do their own legal work thanks to the Internet, there are WAY TOO MANY law schools (and this includes those that train Legal Secretaries and Paralegals) churning out WAY TOO MANY graduates for today's economy and the demand (but the law schools won't tell you this - law students are easy money).
Suggestion: Go into the field of Healthcare! <<< LOTS of jobs there! and scholarships!
Good luck. |
