I am currently starting a new career with the police dept and I recieved a letter for jury duty.?

You have two options.

One option is that you can request a postponement of your jury duty. In CA you can postpone it up to 6 months later, I think. There should have been instructions for this on your jury summons.

The other option is to just go. Your employer is required to allow you to go to jury duty, and surely a police department knows this. You need to show the summons to your supervisor as soon as possible so that you can work something out regarding your training.

Immediately inform the court clerk and your new work. You will more than likely be excused.

You can go to jail if you skip the jury duty. You must contact the court and get it excused first. You may wish for the academy to send them a letter or call them as well.

You need to contact the clerk IMMEDIATELY. If you do not show with out proper contact, you are likely to lose your police department job too. Your jury duty will likely be postponed to a later date, or excused all together. It is highly unlikely that any defense attorney would allow a member of the police department to be on the jury.

First, your "employer" must let you go.

However, usually you can write a letter and "request" to have your jury duty put off for several months, as long as you explain why and are willing to take it on later. My husband put in a request because he was new at his job and was worried that it would negatively affect his training, and he was put off for 3 months. Then he served.

You can be held in contempt of court if you do not respond to the summons...and I guarantee that once they find out you were hired by the police department, you will lose your job over it.

All you can do is answer to the summons, and give them your reason..

By law..the police department MUST allow you to go to jury duty...boot camp or not, so don't worry about your job...the police deparment is one employer that I guarantee will understand.

You have no choice but to respond. It's the law.

If you just don't reply to the jury duty letter, they will likely send the sheriff out to get you. So don't do that.

Talk to your supervisor and ask how to handle it.

Yes, but you will have to receive permission from
the judge. Sometimes they allow you to call or
write in with good excuses, but do it soon, otherwise
you will have to stand in that long line before giving yours.

No you can't jury duty is important and you were chosen for that .

What worked for me was writing to them and telling them i couldnt write all that well, i got a letter within a week saying i was excused from jury service, a little white lie but it worked.

That's a really good question. Usually you're not allowed to skip jury duty, but I think they would make an exception for you. You're going into law enforcement and so I think that they would look at that over you having to work that day. Your best bet is to go to the court house and check with them there.
