I am rethinking becoming a lawyer?
|
I'm using my aunt's account just so you know.
I'm 15 and have been set on becoming a lawyer for years now. I am doing my GCSEs this coming May/June and I am thinking about what A Levels I will be taking. After seeing things about how tough this career path is, how few places there are for a lot of people, how hard people have to work to achieve so little and pay off their loans, I'm wondering if this is the path I want to take. The law part of it is very appealing to me but the long hours and the lack of holiday time off doesn't. I just don't know what I want to do. I also don't know which type of law I would follow from criminal law to family law or what. Everyone thinks that I will become a lawyer but it's going to be so much hard work and a lot of money. I'm not listening to anyone saying lawyers have no heart etc because I have always been a compassionate person but then I am worried that I may get attached to my clients or something and it become personal. Other career paths I've had in mind are teacher, social worker and (on a law link) guardian ad litem not that I know much about it. I am aware that no stranger can decided my future but I just want any help that you can give. Thanks in advance. Additional Details Just to add a little bit in case it helps. I live in the UK and I'm a young one in my year so I'm in Year 11 which is 10th grade to Americans. I will be going to Sixth Form (like college) Sept 2009 which is the equivalent of 11th and 12th grades. I really like the idea of becoming one but not too sure about hours and how hard it would be to become even a solicitor.

I'm glad that you are so informed! I went to law school without really worrying about the cost of tuition because I thought I'd be able to make enough money to pay it back. I'm a 2L at a Tier 2 school right now. I'm in the top 7%, and I'm on law review, but I cannot find a job! All of the large firms have cut their summer associate programs in half or more because of the economy. I have a 120K debt and no job. :(
By the time you are in law school, the economy might be doing well, so that is a good thing. If you want to work in a large firm, then you should try doing really well in college and on your LSATs so you can get into a top 14 school. If you get into one of those, then you will have a good chance at getting into "Big Law." However, you should still try to work hard and try to rank in the top 30% of the top 14 school. Then you will be well on your way to a job in a large law firm. Right now, salaries at large law firms range from 100K-160K per year. It depends on the location.
You mentioned being a teacher as well. Many people go to law school and then become law school professors, so that could be an option for you. Most professors come from very prestigious law schools, so, again, I would recommend trying to get into a top 14 law school if you would like to become a law school professor.
You said that you are a compassionate person, so you might be more interested in working in the public interest or government sector. The good news is that many schools have programs that help you to pay back your loans when you work in either of those sectors. You also can go to any law school for this job. The bad news is that the overall salaries are low. I guess my advice is that if law school is something you really want, then go! Sorry if this is long!
I just realized that you said you are in the UK, so my answer might be totally wrong because I was basing it off the US! |

Do what your mind tells you. Don't become a lawyer because other people expect you to, and if you don't want to work all those hours then don't. You will have a much happier life working at a job you love with not so much pay, rather then a job you hate when you get tons of money. Your only 15, so you have a few years to think before you go to college. |

If you don't want to put up lot of hours studying or having to work long hours, civil service work could give you decent hours and decent pay. Teacher you mentioned might appeal to you. Research and find out what it takes to be a teacher. It's a rewarding job if you become a good one. My cousin has been a school teacher for more than 34 years. She has many graduates stopping her saying "hello and thank you" to practically everywhere we go. |
