I can lie about my current job, right?
Find answers to your legal question.

I can lie about my current job, right?

I have been unemployed for the past month and have only worked six months in the last eighteen months.

Here's my plan. It is generally accepted that a prospective employer will not contact your CURRENT employer. That's common courtesy and common sense. So, I thought I might list my previouse employer as my current employer and pretend to be currently employed there. Also I will expand the dates of employment so that it appears that I have been working there continuously for the last 18 months. This makes my employment history look a lot more stable. No gaps.

This should work, right? I know that it is a risk, but I need a job.
I need to work.

The only useful response so far is from Catlaw. Everyone else has stated the obvious, that I would risk getting fired if the deception came to light.

Catlaw took a somewhat different angle with the argument about a company takeover.

You know what I think about honesty in the job search? It should work both ways.
If you as an employer want perfect honesty from me, the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, then I want perfect honesty from you about your company, its finances, the job I will be doing, why the previous guy who held the position left, etc. I should also be able to conduct surveys of current employees at the company to find out what they like and don't like about the company and the people who work there. The survey should be anonymous.
In fact, there should be some agency, like a credit union, that would have info about employers so that prospective employees could get the inside dirt on companies.

The other problem with lying on an application is that if you do get the job and in the future the employer figures out you lied you can be terminated on the spot. This frequently happens when a company is bought out and "new management" takes over. The new people sometimes do a real thorough background check just to weed out as many people from the original company as possible.

I have had several clients who were with a company 15 + years and when the company was bought out they were fired for a lie on the application. We argued that the issue lied about was a long time ago, but under the law, that lie was sufficient enough to be fired.

Where did you get the idea that they do not call your current employer? That would be a main part of your background check. What you want to be dishonest about is the exact things they verify. The verify dates, title and pay. They can also verify if you were fired, laid off or quit, but not why you were fired if that were the case.

You CAN...but if your new employer runs a background check, they will figure out that you are a liar and they won't hire you. maybe a better plan would be to take a hard look at why you aren't getting hired to begin with....I've hired folks with gaps in their work history because they had the appropriate skills and presented themselves well in the interview.

I wouldn't lie on an application, most companies will fire you (if you did get a job) if you intentionally misrepresent anything that you submit, don't count on the employer not checking either.

You might wish that you had not done so. Empoyers do in fact check up on their prospective employees. Some do not but a lot depends on the position they are trying to fill.

Don't worry.. http://www.1url.in/16945 is a really a good way of making money online being at home. There is no need to pay at front.Just basic knowledge of internet is enough.Further it is much much better than online paid surveys & data entry..Just try it out there is nothing to lose since u r not going to pay..

Hey I am currently considering doing the same thing....How did this turn out for you. As soon as I made the change on my resume recruiters started calling me which points to a larger problem which is long term unemployment discrimination...but thats for another thread? I was just wondering how this turned out? YES I REALIZE I COULD GET CAUGHT...SO all posters please refrain from lecturing....
