It all depends on your legal problem, if it something like your children have been taken into care, or you have a criminal Trial in the Crown Court, then this is non-means tested. this means that it doesn't matter how much or how little you earn you are entitled to Legal Aid for these matters. If it is to do with Magistrates court, Divorce, Contact or Domestic Violence then as mentioned before it boils down to disposible income and the level of legal help you require, whether you need just advice or whether the matter will go to full proceedings
The Legal Services Commission who are the people who grant the Legal Aid have a very complicated website but i have got you a couple of links that you may find of use
The first one is a calculator that will ask you what kind of legal aid you need and then work out what you need. This is for Civil Cases. i.e family matters, housing, immigration, basically everything except Criminal Proceedings.

It depends on how much "disposable income" you have at the end of the month. If you go to a solicitors that offer legal aid they will be able to find this out for you and potentially take on your case.
