I currently work for a lawyer three times a week....?

he can't afford to hire me full-time because he doesn't overcharge his clients like most lawyers do. I call him a blue collar lawyer. I love working for him because he is very nice to me. I have a lot of health problems and he understands that, so it works out great. I was recently offered a job with another lawyer for the two remaining days of the week. I want to be honest with my first boss about me getting another part-time since they both practice immigration law. Also, sometimes he shifts my schedule, I don't want to have to lie and say that I have an appointment on the days that I'm working for the other lawyer. How do I tell my boss (the nicest guy in the world) about my other part-time. He is under the impression that I already have a load on my shoulders with the three days that I work for him but he doesn't know that I'm feeling better about my health and that I'm ready to take on more work. I know he can't afford me so what do I tell him?

From a very neutral professional position I would tell the 3 day boss about the 2 day cover. This way you can also ensure your workload is evened out on regular days. This may also benefit you by the fact that he may need your abilities on the weekends, which would translate to extra $$$ for you.

Best of luck to you and congratulations!

Definitely tell him!! I worked at an immigration law firm for 2 yrs...and when I decided to quit, I started looking at firms that didn't do immigration law b/c they would be my boss's competition. Be honest, he might not like the idea. Immigration lawyers are far and few inbetween and believe me, they don't want their personal tools of the trade getting out. It's like when we do H1B visa for clients, have you ever looked at their employer contracts? Since IT is so specialized, they specifically put a non-competitive clause in it. It's kind of like what we do. Immigration is so specialized, your boss might not want you to go to the competition's firm on your days off at his.

Tell him the truth. Be sure that working for the other lawyer won't cause a conflict of interst...especially since they are in the same practice area.

Tell him. They are competitors.

That would be like me working for Coke and Pepsi at the same time.
