2 weeks notice is all that is required of you to give your employer. When I resigned from my previous job, they asked me to stay longer, too. But family comes first for me so I said Sorry, but I can't.

Don't stay if you don't want to, especially if you have suffered. Tell them you have other things scheduled, you are really sorry, but you cannot stay. You need to start your new job or something.

No you won't look like a bad person. Just tell him you have already given an extra week over the two weeks standard notice, and aren't able to work longer. You don't have to say why.

first of all you only need to give them two weeks notice before you leave and just leave you dont owe them anything. just be strong and do what you think is right.good luck and have a nice holliday

No, it is not required. HOWEVER, if they think that highly of you that they want you to stay, it does represent another weeks' income.

Do you have another job lined up? Then, there is no reason to stay if you are committed to another job. If you don't have another job lined up, then perhaps you could use the time to talk top your employer about the problems you are having, and there may be something could be done about them.

You've already gone "above and beyond" what is normal. Let them know that. You gave them 3 weeks instead of 2 and now you have to go. Thank them and say goodbye. Trust me, I've worked for many years, and the vast majority of companies will throw you to the curb in a heartbeat no matter how loyal you are to them. You owe them nothing else - be with your children and lose the stress. Take care.

The rest of the group gave you the correct answer. Ask for a 30%+ increase in pay until the position is filled. That will motivate them to hire someone or let you go without hard feelings. Your time is worth the more money because you have fulfilled you obligation of notice and the pay increase is what you think is needed to equal the additional length of time you remain stressed. This quote (by someone who's name I can't remember) made is appropriate here: "When you steal my purse you steal trash. When you take my time, you take my life." (I think that is accurate)

If you are in the US, and are working in a "work-at-will" job, then you can leave, and your employer can let you go for any reason or no reason at all. If you are under a contract or part of a union you need to see how your job description/agreement are written. I'll suggest a couple of options that may work. Only you can figure out if either of them are good for you:

A two week notice is a professional courtesy, not a legal responsibility of yours. If you are unable to stay for whatever reason, then do not feel compelled to do so. Be flattered that they want you to stay on and say so. You also don't need to divulge your reason for leaving other than maybe telling them you have a pressing personal matter that needs to be addressed and will be unable to stay. Period. If they press for information, you are under no obligation to go any further. Just thank them for their concern and let them know you need to stand firm on the end date.

The other thing to consider is taking the very high road and asking if there is something that can be done at home part time, at home that would help them while they search for a permanent solution. But that is only if you are up to it. If you go this route, have a firm date that you will no longer be avalable to help,or if you want to try this on to better balance your life, let them know you may consider it long term if it works out

3 weeks notice is adequate. 2 weeks is typical. You were nice enough to give them one extra week above and beyond. Move on. Your child will always come first! Down the road you will be happy you did. Let your guilt go!

It is not your fault they can not find anyone. This is a bad economy and job market is scarce. They should have a wealth of people applying if they are doing their search correctly.

You don't own your work anything it is good enough that you gave them 3 weeks .
If they would have to let you go they won't hesitated to walk you out the door the same day.
If they are laying people off they don't care of you have bills to pay and feed your children. Why should you?
Most people give only 2 weeks notice and that is sufficient enough.Don't worry just say you can't.
