if your employer does not reimburse you for the actual expenses they should pay you mileage. depending on your rate of pay they may not reimburse you as long as your hourly rate is not taken below minimum wage due to the expense, in which case you can write it off on your taxes. this is an unreimbursed employee expense, you must document your mileage and this must be in writing and accurate.
i suggest you consult with a tax adviser or go to :
http://www.irs.gov
for more information on the expenses, how to keep records and the tax savings involved.

You most certainly should! Make sure you are tracking your work mileage. That means the commutes that you make from the office to other office locations, clients, etc. NOT your home to your office. Submit this info with receipts to your manager. The cost of gas has been rising so much lately that some companies are having a hard time keeping up, but this kind discrepancy means they simply haven't a clue how much you are driving around, and you need to let them know. If they don't get you reimbursed soon, start looking for a new job, because it should not cost you money to work!

A few ideas
A) As said before, track all work mileage, using records of purchases along the routes as proof if needed.
B1) If possible in your line of work, get a smaller car. If you job involves shipping in some form and requires a truck you are out of luck, though.
B2) Get a Prius or something else hybrid and/or bio-diesel and/or natural-gas powered with ridiculously good mileage.
C) Manage your driving well...don't accelerate hard...if you have a big vehicle especially limit yourself to almost always only travelling on freeways not roads that lose gas mileage over acceleration...also travel home far after rush-hour to avoid traffic.

D) Do what I do, only drive to the nearest "park and ride" to your home and, from there, take a bus or train to work. Either that or carpool with your friends. By doing this, I only spend about $10-15 on gas a week, including weekends (where I use my car to go places after public transportation hours).

They don't HAVE to pay you more. But I would tell them I have to have it. They know is going on with gas prices.
If they will not give you more, looks like time to move on.

Is this for work???? If iit is for work, your work is requitredd to pay for your gas. if not for work, then I guess just learn to drive a little less.
