Find answers to your legal question.

I got laid off from an independent contractor 1099 job. can i collect unemployment?

i recently got laid off from a steady position i had for 2 years which was paid to me on an independent contractor basis - i got a Form 1099 at the end of the year. I filed and paid for my own California and Federal taxes. Can I file for unemployment?

I don't think so since technically you are not an employee. Check with your state.

Judy
No, sorry, independent contractors aren't eligible for unemployment. Employers pay into the uc fund for employees, but contractors aren't covered.

I would think so, but to make sure you should check with your state unemployment office.

yes contact the unemployment office

kelly
Yes you can but only for 6 months and you have to also show the effort that you are looking for another job, but they will take the wages that you earned and you will only get a fraction of that so for instance if you were making 2,000 a month then you will only get between 800 to 1200 a month.
