I have a B.S. Political Science and a MPA what can I do for a career upgrade?

I have a B.S. Political Science degree and a MPA degree and I cannot get a job. In simple terms, every job interview I go on I am overqualified due to my education experience. What can I do to make myself more marketable or should I get another degree in a more techinical field(computer, information systems, etc...) I hae been contemplating law school but I was hoping to have a decent paying job to pay my way through law school but I cannot get one due to my education..Any suggestions on what I can do is greatly appreciated, thanks. Additional Details When I go job interviews, I am overqualified for entry level and underqualified for mid-level jobs. Many employers have asked me why do I want this type of job with my education. I need a break!!! I am looking to get out of the government field so because this field has become a dead field.

Don't go down the rabbit hole of law school, unless you want to be posting on here in 4 yrs or so something like, I have a B.S. in Poly Science, MPA, and a law degree but I cannot get a decent job. A recent study said 3 out of 4 people regreted becoming a lawyer.
I agree with M, you are not going to pay your way through law school, you will end up with debt unless you are a trust fund baby, like some of sons of the I-Bank crowd that I went to school with, but if that were the case you would not need a high paying job or a job period.
My advice to you is to chill out on the education. If you were just starting post high school education I would say study something in the healthcare field, that is where there is high demand and employers are willing to pay you well for your education. You have enough education at this point. You need work experience. You may not get paid the uber bucks at first but eventually you could. My sister had an undergrad psyche degree and worked in human resources/recruiting and ended up making $165,000 after several years.
My advice to you is to know what you like and don't like. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Then I would look for a field that pays well or can lead to good pay and aligns with your skills and interests. You may want to find a career coach to help you. You may want to try a few different things, but it will cost a lot less than a law degree and you will be making money, and the effort you would have spent on the LSAT, law school, bar exam could be used to get you ahead in your career. Looking back, the richest guy in my upper middle-class neighberhood was a plumber when I was in high school, he owned a plumbing company. |

Are you applying for a job in the private or public sector? Frankly the private sector has very little use for Poly Sci or MPA majors. These are degrees used in the public sector. Apply with the federal, local, or state governments. They pay pretty comparable to the private sector and have much better pensions and medical benefits. |

I've been where you are. When I left undergraduate school, I couldn't get a job, even though my undergrad was a top 20 school. That's one of the reasons I went on to law school.
It seems to me like you're probably going to have to go back to school. Most employers won't hire anybody without work experience in the field they're trying to get a job in, unless it's one of those low-level positions that people claim you're overqualified for or positions in fields such as law where they have their own weird way of doing things (which is where going back to school comes in). Employers nowadays really don't care about education that much. Everyone I know who's in school otherwise is planning to teach, go into law, medicine or business. And about law school...pretty much no one pays their way through--it costs too much. When you decide to go to law school, you just accept that you're about to go into debt unless you're from a rich family...simple as that. If you do decide to go to law school, make sure you're well-informed before doing so. Law school doesn't guarantee a job. |
