Find answers to your legal question.

I have a job interview on Monday with an attorney. he is looking for an assistant. what should i expect?

I am 17 years old and talked to an attorneys secretary yesterday. She told me the attorney is in another state for a trial. She explaiend that i will basically do whatever the attorney needs (make copies, send faxs, etc.) She told me that I should go in on monday for an interview. I've never had a job similiar to this. so, im asking what I should expect?

Thanks!

Most attorneys are detailed orientated and expect that you take voluminous notes or at the very least, bring along a portable taperecorder to record his assignments taking note of many details which are often overlooked unless you ask a lot of questions. Again, be very detailed minded and don't be afraid to ask questions, even ones which you think are necessary to complete the assignment. Again, you are not a mind reader and the attorney should not expect you to be a mind reader. This is a gopher position which involves a lot of menial assignments, even calling his relatives, wife and children to schedule various meetings, etc.

Good luck!

Expect to want to be her assistant and that by doing a respectful good job you will learn about the legal profession. Tell her you expect to either become an attorney or have a position in the legal field and need to learn from the inside. Then be honest about your strengths and willing to please and get along as a team person even though you understand the position is as an assistant to this person. Be certain to remember her rules and what tasks she wants and keep them in writing for yourself.
My daughter is an undergraduate hoping to study law and is doing similar work, good luck to you too.

Just be yourself.
Don't ever expect to 'cheat' a sophiticated attorney.

Stay calm. I am an attorney. I can tell you that when I was looking for a PA all I wanted is a person responsible and someone to trust that would do the job right.

Also make sure you are interested in the job or at least give the impression you are truly interested in the job.

My PA impressed me by showing up to the interview with a "Getting Hired" Guide.

Now that was a person who really wanted the job.
I read the "Getting Hired" book myself after that. :)

Here is a link. Maybe you can impress that attorney the same way.
