I have a law degree but did not pass bar. Is it worth it to get paralegal cert. for more $$?

Legal assistant jobs don't pay very much without a paralegal cert. and I have a family to support immediately. I also have very little "legal" experience besides summer internships while in law school. Please help!!!

I've been doing a lot of legal job shopping lately and I've found a number of jobs that are looking for people with a J.D. but don't require bar passage.

Many administrative jobs and government jobs are looking for combinations of education and experience. A J.D. is a VERY versatile degree and having one can open up doors in non-legal areas. I also recently saw an add for an attorney in Cincinnati who was looking for someone who had graduated but had yet to pass the bar with the understanding the the person would continue to take the bar and pass within two years.

Not that I'm trying to discourage the paralegal route, but other paths are open. Contact the career services person at your school and ask about non-legal jobs. Also, if you were taking the bar in a state like NY, CA, TX, VA, or FL consider some other state. If moving is an option, or federal law jobs are an option (which require passage in ANY state, not the state you work) then consider North Dakota or some other 90+% passage rate state.

Two different problems here. One, you failed the bar. (Very common, BTW, so don't beat yourself up over it.) Two, you need income.

These are related problems only if you make them be. Get a job, any job. In your spouse is able to work, s/he should, too, for the short-term. (Since there are kids involved, maybe the caregiver can add one more, at an hourly rate?)

Instead of spending the money on a paralegal certificate to do a job that doesn't pay well and for which you're vastly overqualified, spend it on a bar preparation course. Enlist your family's support by making sure you have study time.

Good luck!

Not too many people do pass the bar the first time they take it. Keep studying and working at it and you'll pass. But, yeah, take a job for now.
