Is it legal that you work at a job and after you're hired your boss tells you that if you quit $250 will be taking out of your last check if you don't give a two weeks notice.

I live in IL and I have been working there for 3 weeks. I haven't even gotten my first check.

IF you did not sign a contract and receive some type of compensation in advance then this is illegal. employers can not take deductions from your pay that you have not given your approval for and those deductions generally must be for your benefit not the employers. this sounds like a manager who has little in the way of management skills and is trying to "scare" you so that if you do quit you will give a notice.
IF you do not have a contract that addresses this issue then it is illegal.
when you do quit you should give and work out a notice but it is not required by law and you can not be charged any fee for failure to give it. |

If you are an employer, then neither of these things (the $250 deduction for not giving notice and the failure to have you complete a W-4) were legal.
If you are an independent contractor, then both the $250 penalty clause and the lack of a W-4 are legal. |

There should be some sort of probationary period especially in highly skilled jobs.
