I haven't been able to start work yet because of the strike and the agency must have known about it before it flew me out. Am I still entitled to be paid, as I have made myself available for work?

If you have actually signed a contract to work for six weeks, read the terms and conditions to see what it says. If, however, you are simply signed to the agency & have verbally agreed to take up this assignment for six weeks you may not be entitled to anything. With temping as a rule, you only get paid for the work you do, if there's a strike & you can't work, you don't get paid.
Ring the agency & ask them what will happen in this case but I suspect you won't get paid. Ask them how long they think strike action will last, if it's too long & you can't take the financial hit involved, you'll have to ask them to find you a new assignment. |

Have you tried going to work or has the place closed because of the strike?
They would need to compensate you fairly, so any costs (hotel, food, airfares, etc), plus I would expect to recieve the minimum payment that you agreed upon. You signed to do a job for 6 weeks at $XYZ then you should be paid that, you may need to see a lawyer though.
In the mean time I would ring your local Department of Industrial Relations and ask their advice. |
