reference doesn't have to be a teacher, can almost be anyone. I've read references from doctors, vicars, bosses, anyone with a higher qualification of learning (degree etc). Its really just a safety net to make sure you're not a nutter, its more of a formality these days then necessary.

ironically the people who know you for years, family and friends are usually not allowed to give references, but the doctor who moved here from Pakistan 2 weeks ago and has only met you for 5 minutes is fine.

By law, your previous school/employer cannot give a 'bad' reference. They can decline and just confirm attendance dates. So you could still use your school & just tell future employers that you had a clash of personalities with teacher, the employer may not be bothered by this - it's worth a shot. Can't think of any jobs where they wouldn't want a reference but If you're polite & enthusiastic on interview, the fact that they cannot obtain a character reference may not be a problem. Good luck
