I have questions about job discrimination!?

I work for a small independent family owned business. The owner has his two children working there. He shows more than favoritism to his children when it comes to work ethic. For example, his children show up "when they feel like it" even tho they are scheduled 40 hours per week. When I was sick and missed a couple days, the owner told me that if I didn't show up, I would "need to work somewhere else." The same week I was sick, one of his children hadn't shown up all week. Not only do they not show up, they don't call. They are never reprimanded or disciplined. They are allowed to bring their children to work, one is an infant and the other is a toddler. They aren't required to follow dress code, but everyone else is. I have been employed with this job almost 8 years and it is always this kind of situation. My question is, is it possible to sue for discrimination? Or is this just the way it is with family businesses? Are family business allowed to basically do what they want? I know people will say that I should quit my job, but I love every aspect of my job except this and in these economic times I need to work. Are there any laws prohibiting this kind of discrimination?

they are not discriminating against you they are just favoring other people. Family owed businesses are often like this, I use to work for one myself. But all you can do it look for another job.

This is what happens when you work for family business. You can't sue for discrimination that is silly. this is the culture of family owed business the family members do what they want and come and go when they please.

that the big problem with family there are hard to fire you on the other hand are easy to fire they don't have see you when they get home, it is not discrimination

No laws in this case.

It's almost the same as though you worked corporate, or even Civil Service: cliques are "family", or now it's Who You Know, not What You Know. Kiss up to bosses/management and you'll get priviledges those outside the cliques won't get.

I worked with a difficult coworker who, because she kissed-up, was give net priviledges, allowed to surf all day and do nothing else, assault another coworker, was rude to the public-actions that wouldn't have been tolerated anywhere else. By the way, this was in a governmental agency your taxes are paying for.

Look for another job while working this one, but understand there will be employees given more priviledges than you will if you're not a 'team player.'

Good luck
